Change not a good sign

Arizona Cardinals
10/04/2006 12:17 PM
The Arizona Republic reports QB Matt Leinart's ascent to the Cardinals' starting quarterback position is no cause for celebration. Instead, it's an indication of just how much has gone wrong this season and perhaps a symptom of the organization's greater ills. Not that replacing QB Kurt Warner with Leinart was the wrong move. HC Dennis Green had little choice, given the interceptions, turnovers, sacks and losses in recent weeks. Blaming only Warner for the problems is myopic, although that's the nature of the quarterback position. No team ever found inspiration from benching a center. Cleveland Browns

ClevelandBrowns.com reports KR Joshua Cribbs was named AFC Special Teams Player-of-the-Week, the NFL announced this morning.  Cribbs contributed to the Browns 24-21 win at Oakland last Sunday with two kickoff returns for 118 yards (59.0 avg.), as each return helped the Browns gain valuable field position and sparked the offense. In the 2nd quarter, Cribbs had a 65-yard kickoff return down to the Oakland 32-yard line, and seven plays later K Phil Dawson converted a 28-yard field goal to cut the Oakland lead, 14-3.  Also in the 2nd quarter, Cribbs added a 53-yard kickoff return to the Oakland 43-yard line, and seven plays later QB Charlie Frye connected with TE Darnell Dinkins on a three-yard TD pass to cut the Oakland lead, 21-10. Cribbs, 6-1 and 192 lbs., currently ranks fifth in the NFL with a 27.8 kickoff return average.  Cribbs, a two-year NFL veteran out of Kent State, has totaled 14 kickoff returns this year for 389 yards (27.8 avg.). The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports even with a 3-1 record, the Falcons have issues as they head into the bye week. They need to score more touchdowns in the red zone, and there are potential lineup issues on a defense that has allowed only one touchdown this season. A look at the issues: The Falcons have scored three touchdowns in 17 trips within the opponents' 20-yard line. The defense has allowed the Falcons to kick field goals and win, but players and HC Jim Mora said the offense must score touchdowns. Read more

Trigger-happy

Miami Dolphins
10/04/2006 12:05 PM
The Palm Beach Post reports the Dolphins will attempt to use the shotgun more with QB Daunte Culpepper. They used it more against the Texans because it allows him to see the play and the blitzes earlier. "Daunte managed that situation extremely well in the game, which he's showing an ability to do," Saban said. "I think that's not something you ignore." Read more
