The Indianapolis Star reports WR Brandon Stokley's availability for Sunday's opener against the New York Giants might not be determined until a few hours before kickoff, but the Colts apparently aren't taking any chances. Rather than be caught short-handed at wide receiver if Stokley's sprained left ankle prevents him from playing, the team signed WR John Standeford from the practice squad to the active roster. The Dayton Daily News reports Bengals WR Chad Johnson was trash-talking Kansas City's cornerbacks when a different subject was brought up. Johnson has been named the Grand Marshal of Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati, which is billed as the largest and most authentic Oktoberfest in North America with more than 500,000 people attending the two-day event since its inception in 1976. As part of his duties, Johnson will lead the crowd in "The Chicken Dance" on opening day, Sept. 16. Johnson apparently failed to read the fine print when he agreed to be Grand Marshal. Read more

Rams Sign Reed

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Rams might have answered what HC Scott Linehan had described as "a big question mark" by signing a kick returner Monday. His name is J.R. Reed, and because of a freak injury, he hasn't played in a regular-season game in more than a year and a half. Reed, a fourth-round draft pick from the University of South Florida, was Philadelphia's primary return man in 2004. He averaged 23.1 yards on 33 attempts, second among all NFL rookies. He also collected 20 special-teams tackles and saw action as a reserve safety. Read more
