Panthers agree to two-year deal with WR Hackett

AP reports free agent WR D.J. Hackett agreed to two-year, $3.5 million deal with Carolina on Monday as the Panthers continued to upgrade their receiving corps. The former Seahawk chose Carolina over Seattle, Washington and Tampa Bay, according to his agent, Kevin Robinson. He had a minimum salary offer from the Redskins. Read more

Roth pays fine

The Palm Beach Post reports DE Matt Roth, initially scheduled to stand trial in Iowa City, Iowa, for being drunk in public during Super Bowl weekend, agreed to plead guilty and pay a $182 fine. He was arrested Feb. 1 while visiting his alma mater, the University of Iowa. Police said he had caused a disturbance at a bar. Read more

Jets sign ex-Packers TE Franks to one-year deal

AP reports the New York Jets added former Pro Bowler TE Bubba Franks to their roster, according to several New York-area media reports. After catching a career-low 18 passes last season with the Packers, Franks is expected to be a backup behind Chris Baker this season. Franks was cut by Green Bay last month. He was due to make $3 million in base salary. Read more

Ward signs $1.1 million deal with incentives

ESPN’s John Clayton reports the New York Giants, who won the Super Bowl with one of the deepest backfields in football, retained one of their key backups Frday, reaching an agreement with RB Derrick Ward. Ward, 27, agreed to a one-year, $1.1 million deal with incentives that could allow him to make another $1 million. Read more
