Raiders sign former Lions DE Edwards to two-year deal

AP reports the Oakland Raiders signed DE Kalimba Edwards to a two-year contract on Friday as they try to improve their pass rush for next season. Edwards was cut earlier this month by the Detroit Lions. He will reportedly earn $5 million in the deal with the Raiders. Edwards, a second-round pick out of South Carolina in 2002, has 26 sacks and 10 forced fumbles in six seasons in the NFL. His best year came in 2005, when he recorded a career-high seven sacks. Rather than giving Coles extension, Jets guarantee rest of contract

ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas reports the New York Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on the final two years of WR Laveranues Coles' contract, a league source said Friday. Coles had been seeking a contract extension, but guaranteeing the remaining two years is an apparent compromise between the team and the receiver. Coles had been critical of the Jets earlier in the offseason for spending money on players from outside and not taking care of players already on the team. Read more

Browns sign McKinney

The Cleveland Browns have signed OL Seth McKinney to a one-year contract, the club announced Friday. McKinney, 6-feet-3 and 315 pounds, started 8 games for the Browns at right guard in 2007 before a shoulder injury sidelined him for the season. Read more

Watson not commenting on surgery on his left ankle

AP reports New England Patriots TE Benjamin Watson underwent surgery on his left ankle within the past few weeks, surgery that revealed both cartilage damage and scar tissue, according to several sources familiar with the situation. When asked about the surgery this afternoon at Gillette Stadium, Watson, who was there taking part in the offseason conditioning program, declined comment, saying: "I can't talk about it." According to sources, the surgery was performed at Massachusettes General Hospital by Dr. George Theodore. Read more
