Oakland Raiders 05/08/2008 8:55 AMAP reports the Oakland Raiders signed free-agent LB Edgerton Hartwell, hoping he can revive a career beset by injuries in recent seasons. The 30-year-old Hartwell played only 13 games in 2005 and '06 with Atlanta because of injuries to his knee and Achilles' tendon. He was cut by Cincinnati before the start of last season and sat out the entire year. He signed with Oakland on Tuesday and will have a chance to compete for the starting strong-side linebacker spot alongside Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard. Robert Thomas and Sam Williams shared those duties last season. The Raiders have been looking to upgrade their run defense after allowing a league-worst 4.8 yards per carry last season.Read more
New Orleans Saints 05/07/2008 9:59 PMThe Times-Picayune reports the Saints will bring in free-agent tailback Shaun Alexander for a visit this week, a sign that they're still in the market for some insurance in case RB Deuce McAllister is unable to return to form. Alexander, 30, was released by the Seattle Seahawks last month after two disappointing, injury-plagued seasons. The former league MVP and three-time Pro Bowl player was scheduled to make his first free-agent visit with the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday. Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis confirmed Alexander's visit, but he declined further comment. McAllister said he wouldn't be surprised or opposed if the Saints add another tailback before training camp.Read more
Seattle Seahawks 05/07/2008 9:53 PMThe Seattle Times reports WR Bobby Engram slipped into Seahawks headquarters Tuesday morning to deliver a letter for coach Mike Holmgren. That was the end of his business. Engram didn't stay for practice, missing a second straight day of minicamp to show his discontent over his contract, concerns he presumably outlined in the letter. Holmgren made light of the special delivery. "I kind of enjoy that," Holmgren kidded. "It means he graduated from college and he can type." But there wasn't more to chuckle about. Engram is the longest-tenured Seahawks wide receiver, setting a team record with 94 receptions last season, his finest of a 12-year pro career with the Chicago Bears and Seahawks.Read more
