Fox: Stewart to get shot at kick returns

The Charlotte Observer reports first-round draft pick RB Jonathan Stewart could be the Carolina Panthers' primary kickoff returner next season as well as their featured running back. Coach John Fox dropped the news at a Charlotte Touchdown Club luncheon Wednesday when asked who would be the team's kickoff returner. It's an area of serious concern for Panthers fans because the team ranked last and next-to-last in the NFL over the past two seasons, respectively, with the two worst yards-per-return averages in team history (19.4 in 2006 and 19.1 in '07). The Panthers haven't had a kickoff return for a touchdown since Rod Smart did it in 2003. Read more

Saints sign LSU's Stewart

The Times-Picayune reports the Saints signed former LSU OL Carnell Stewart on Wednesday, two days after he was released by the New York Giants. The Saints also signed three tryout players from last weekend's rookie minicamp -- QB Travis Lulay, DT Marcus Pittman and WR Carlos Robinson. And they waived four undrafted rookies -- QB T.C. Ostrander, WR Evan Moore and offensive linemen Nate McManus and Akim Millington. Read more

Redskins release KR Mathis, sign DE Mapu

AP reports the Washington Redskins released former Pro Bowl kick returner Jerome Mathis on Thursday and signed undrafted rookie DE J.T. Mapu. Mathis signed with Washington early last month, making him the only player from another team to join the Redskins during an unusually quiet free agency period before the draft. He made his practice debut during this month's minicamp. Read more
