San Francisco 49ers 09/10/2008 7:52 AMThe San Francisco Chronicle reports QB Alex Smith and the 49ers were still waiting Tuesday night for a determination from Dr. James Andrews on whether he will need more surgery on his injured right shoulder. Andrews, one of the top orthopedic surgeons in the country, performed Smith's shoulder surgery in December. Smith said he had shoulder pain after Friday's practice, and he was on the inactive list for Sunday's season opener, which the 49ers lost to Arizona. An MRI exam revealed a fracture, Smith said. Andrews received the test results and other information from the 49ers' team physicians Tuesday at his office in Birmingham, Ala.Read more
Tennessee Titans 09/10/2008 7:35 AMThe Nashville Tennessean reports with Titans QB Vince Young out indefinitely, the Titans on Tuesday began firming up their back-up plans. Those plans include veteran QB Chris Simms, not former Montgomery Bell Academy star Ingle Martin. MRI results Tuesday confirmed Young, injured in Sunday’s win over the Jaguars, has a left MCL sprain. While the team had no timetable for his return, early indications are it could keep him out from two to four weeks. But there were also indications the team might be prepared to let QB Kerry Collins lead the way if the team is playing well even when Young returns. On Tuesday, the Titans agreed to terms with Simms, who will serve as Collins’ backup starting with Sunday’s game at Cincinnati.Read more

Veterans Ernest Wilford and Greg Camarillo and rookies Davone Bess and Anthony Armstrong probably are vying for three spots. Wilford, who signed a four-year deal with $6 million guaranteed, struggled with drops during much of training camp. But he made two catches Thursday night, including a leaping, 24-yarder. Armstrong, who played in the Arena League, is one of the team's best deep threats. Camarillo and Bess are more sure handed and better route runners.Read more
