Pittsburgh Steelers 09/10/2008 8:33 AMThe Post-Gazette reports add QB Ben Roethlisberger to the mounting list of NFL quarterbacks who were injured in opening games over the weekend. The good news for Roethlisberger is that the Steelers expect him to play Sunday night in Cleveland. Still, he has a sore shoulder, which happened when he hit the turf on a sack by Houston's DE Mario Williams Sunday at Heinz Field. That shoulder will limit how much Roethlisberger practices today. He had a big opening game with 13 of 14 pass completions and two touchdown passes to Hines Ward in the Steelers' 38-17 victory. Roethlisberger had tests on his shoulder and injured right knee Monday. He said after the game that his knee was hyperextended when Houston DT Amobi Okoye rolled into him near the end of the first half.Read more
Cleveland Browns 09/10/2008 8:26 AMThe Cleveland Plain Dealer reports sixth-round draft pick WR Paul Hubbard of Wisconsin was re-signed to the practice squad Tuesday. The Browns also added RB Allen Patrick to the practice squad and waived RB Omar Cuff. Hubbard said, however, that he's drawn interest from another team and could sign elsewhere this week. He declined to say which team. "I would be excited about a new opportunity, but a little bit disappointed to leave the Browns," he said.Read more
San Diego Chargers 09/10/2008 8:15 AMThe San Diego union-Tribune reports in a decision that was shocking only because of the way he played two days earlier, Chargers LB Shawne Merriman Tuesday decided he can play no more in his current condition. General Manager A.J. Smith said Merriman informed him Tuesday he will undergo surgery to reconstruct the torn ligaments in his left knee. “He walked in and said it didn't feel right and he was going to shut it down,” Smith said. Merriman will be placed on injured reserve and miss the remainder of the season. He is expected to return in time for the start of the 2009 season, which is his final one under contract with the Chargers.Read more
St. Louis Rams 09/10/2008 8:03 AMThe St. Louis Dispatch reports at age 35, WR Eddie Kennison still runs in the 4.4s. That's not quite as fast as the 4.3-second times he used to post with regularity in the 40 coming out of Louisiana State, but it's still faster than most. By all accounts, he's in excellent shape. He looked good catching passes during his workout Tuesday at Rams Park. So why not play Sunday against the New York Giants? "We'll see how the week goes," Kennison said Tuesday afternoon. "But, I would say 'yes,' they're looking for me to play Sunday."Read more
