Fractured Ribs For Westbrook

The official website of the Philadelphia Eagles reports head coach Andy Reid updated the injury situation on Monday and announced that running back Brian Westbrook fractured two of his ribs during Sunday's 23-17 loss to the Washington Redskins. Westbrook finished the day with 84 total yards (33 rushing and 51 receiving) and one touchdown. Westbrook accounted for 39 total yards on the game's opening drive and scored on a 9-yard run up the middle to put the Eagles up 7-0. Reid said that he believes the injury occurred on the eighth play of the opening drive, which was an 11-yard pass from Donovan McNabb to L.J. Smith. Read more

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports even while RB LaDainian Tomlinson was unable to do much more than run straight ahead, his aching right big toe limiting his burst moving laterally, defenses were stacked to stop him. So nothing is going to change now that he is moving so ably left and right – and now that he is entering the time of the season when in the past couple of years he's really begun to produce. “That's what it's going to be in the running game,” quarterback Philip Rivers said this week. “LT has been doing it a lot of years now. Teams scheme and find ways to stop him and stop his cutbacks and stop the way we run the ball.” Read more

Vikings' Bernard Berrian 'optimistic' he'll be able to play Monday

The Pioneer Press reports Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian was "optimistic" he would be able to play Monday night in New Orleans despite a right knee injury that slowed him more this week. Berrian said Saturday he hurt himself during practice earlier in the week. He is listed as questionable on the team injury report, generally meaning there is a 50-50 chance he could play. Read more

Rookies having very different 1st years

The Detroit Free Press reports the Bears come to Ford Field today with Matt Forte, who leads a strong crop of rookie running backs in rushing and receiving yards. The Lions enter the game with Kevin Smith, who just lost his starting job to veteran Rudi Johnson. The juxtaposition leads to a lot of second-guessing. But it's awfully early in the season and these players' careers, and it's not like the Lions have given up on Smith. There are multiple reasons why Smith has not succeeded like, say, Forte. Read more
