Tony Romo starts throwing, but Brad Johnson is starting for Dallas Cowboys

The Star-Telegram reports despite a busted pinkie on his throwing hand, Tony Romo is trying to give it a go. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback threw passes Wednesday morning and, according to a source, has told the coaches he’s willing to play on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. Romo did not practice on Wednesday, and coach Wade Phillips said if Romo does not practice he will not play. Romo will make the trip to St. Louis. Veteran Brad Johnson practiced with the first-team offense on Wednesday, and is still expected to start on Sunday. Read more

Bush says knee fine; 'just a little swelling'

The Time-Picayune reports Saints RB Reggie Bush, who didn't practice Wednesday because of swelling in his left knee, said there's no cause for alarm. "The knee's fine," Bush said. "Just a little swelling. That's all. Just take it easy. Just a little precautionary stuff, nothing serious. . . . It's been swollen since training camp." Coach Sean Payton said, "It's something we deal with. The feeling today was to calm it down. We'll probably rest him tomorrow as well." Read more

Polamalu criticizes current state of NFL

The Post-Gazette reports S Troy Polamalu looks at the recent fines to Hines Ward for unnecessary roughness, the penalties to players who hit quarterbacks and wonders what those running the NFL are turning the sport into. They're taking the physical nature of the game out of the game, Polamalu said. "It loses so much of its essence, and it really becomes like a pansy game," the Steelers' Pro Bowl strong safety said. "I think regarding the evolution of football, it's becoming more and more flag football, two-hand touch. We've really lost the essence of what real American football is about. I think it's probably all about money. They're not really concerned about safety." Read more

The Indianapolis Star reports the Indianapolis Colts still are in the market for a defensive tackle after John McCargo did not pass his physical, voiding a Tuesday trade with the Buffalo Bills. "He failed our physical,'' Colts president Bill Polian said Wednesday night. "He failed the physical, that's all. By terms of the trade, he reverts to Buffalo.'' Read more
