Singletary names Hill the new starter

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Shaun Hill will be the 49ers' starting quarterback for the Arizona game on Nov. 10 as the team goes into its bye week reeling from five straight defeats while transitioning to an interim head coach. Earlier in the day, coach Mike Singletary said he had not made a decision on his quarterback but by late Monday afternoon, after talking with offensive coordinator Mike Martz and informing the players involved, he named Hill the starter. Steelers' Holmes will start against Redskins

The Post-Gazette reports WR Santonio Holmes will return to start for the Steelers Monday against the Redskins in Washington, coach Mike Tomlin said today. Tomlin made Holmes inactive for Sunday's game against the New York Giants after the wide receiver was charged with marijuana possession last Thursday. Read more

Culpepper pays Lions a visit

The Detroit Free Press reports free agent QB Daunte Culpepper is visiting the Lions today, after reportedly canceling a visit to Kansas City and saying he is in negotiations with a team that is a better fit. Lions spokesman Bill Keenist confirmed that Culpepper is in town for a visit. If the Lions are just doing their homework on Culpepper, that makes sense. They often look at free agents on Tuesdays, the players’ day off, in case they need to sign someone down the road. But if the Lions are considering signing Culpepper, I’m not sure how much sense that makes, unless they think he can help them next year. Read more

Witten could play with broken rib against Giants

AP reports Cowboys TE Jason Witten has a broken rib but could play anyway Sunday against the New York Giants. Witten tried to return after injuring his ribs last weekend against Tampa Bay, but he eventually sat out most of the second half. He could wear added protection against the Giants, according to a posting Tuesday on the team’s Web site. The Cowboys were already without Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo when Witten, the NFL leader in yards (549) and catches (46) among tight ends, got hurt late in the first quarter. Rookie Martellus Bennett and Tony Curtis back up Witten. Read more
