Dolphins release Hagan

The Palm Beach Post reports the Dolphins had high hopes for wide receiver Derek Hagan when they selected him with the No. 82 pick of the 2006 draft. But Hagan never lived up to expectations, failing to even find a spot on the 45-man active roster in four of the past five games. Today, the Dolphins released him, an NFL source confirmed. Hagan, 24, leaves the Dolphins with just 53 catches, three touchdowns and one start in 2 1/2 seasons. Read more

The Detroit Free Press reports America gets a new president. The Lions get a new quarterback. Quick. Which of these events happens every other week? Right you are! The Lions' new quarterback is 31-year-old Daunte Culpepper, who, simply by signing a contract just became the most famous player on the team. That's sad enough. He also became the biggest attraction on the team, the most recognizable name on the team and, to hear some people tell it, the best player on the team. He also may start Sunday's game. Heck. By Monday, he could own Ford Field. Read more

The Post-Gazette reports the Steelers' training room these days looks like the supermarket deli. Take a ticket and wait your turn. "Next!" Just as some players heal and are ready to return, more have reservations. One is TE Heath Miller, who left the win against Washington for good in the first half Monday with a high right ankle sprain and is doubtful for Sunday against Indianapolis. Read more

Sources: Raiders might release pricey players Hall, Walker

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Al Davis and other Raiders staff met Tuesday to discuss the possibility of jettisoning several high-profile players, including cornerback DeAngelo Hall and wide receiver Javon Walker, two people close to the situation confirmed. The release of Hall, 24, would qualify as a major shocker. The Raiders traded second- and fifth-round draft picks to the Atlanta Falcons in March to acquire Hall. They did so with the hope that Hall would form a nice complement to standout Nnamdi Asomugha and give the Raiders two shutdown cornerbacks. Hall struggled from the outset, and opponents focus on throwing passes to his area every game. By comparison, Asomugha has faced only nine passes in eight games. Read more
