Chiefs Sign Gardner

The Kansas City Star reports the Chiefs will soon find out whether WR Rod Gardner, once a first-round draft pick, can help them at wide receiver. Gardner, among a group of wide receivers to work out for the Chiefs last week, agreed to terms of a two-year contract, agent Joel Segal said. Gardner was to sign the contract today and practice for the first time with his new team Wednesday. Read more

McCollum out for the season

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports throughout his previous 12 NFL seasons, Rams C Andy McCollum always has gotten up. Through 181 regular-season and postseason contests, he always has been able to walk away from the pile without serious injury. Not this time. Not this season. Call it the unlucky 13th. "My luck ran out, I guess," McCollum said Monday. McCollum suffered torn ligaments in his left knee midway through the second quarter of Sunday's season opener against Denver. It's a season-ending injury that will require surgery. Read more

The Contra Costa Times reports the 49ers definitely will be without starting left OG Larry Allen for Sunday's home opener, and they probably won't have starting left OT Jonas Jennings, either. But the good news about Allen, who sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee at the start of Sunday's season-opening loss at Arizona, is that he will not need surgery, a team spokesman said Monday. The 49ers are saying Allen will miss two to four weeks. Read more

The Dayton Daily News reports Bengals WR Chris Henry has a preliminary hearing scheduled for today in the 9th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. He's charged with possession of a concealed firearm stemming from his Jan. 28 arrest in Orlando. Read more
