The Pioneer Press reports Vikings starting S Dwight Smith regards himself as a playmaker, and he revels in the spotlight. So Smith, the only NFL player to return two interceptions for touchdowns in a Super Bowl, agonized Monday night when he was deactivated for the Vikings' season opener because of an off-field misstep last month. But Smith said Wednesday that he respects the culture of accountability HC Brad Childress is creating at Winter Park, even if he was one of the first examples. Read more

Williams Stands His Ground

The Detroit Free Press reports WR Roy Williams stood by the comments he made Monday, when he guaranteed the Lions would win Sunday at Chicago. "I still stick to what I believe," Williams said Wednesday, "and I'm going to stay with that every week." Williams reiterated his main point: He thinks if the offense does what it's supposed to do -- and the defense plays the way it did in the season-opening 9-6 loss to Seattle -- the Lions can't be beaten. ‘Skins Re-Sign Burns

The Washington Post reports the Redskins re-signed S Curry Burns and placed S Pierson Prioleau on injured reserve with season-ending knee surgery upcoming. Burns was cut during training camp but knows the system and could adapt quickly in a short week with a big game Sunday night in Dallas. The team also worked out free agent DB Deke Cooper and could opt to sign him as well. Read more

The Houston Chronicle reports the Texans swapped second-year running backs with the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday. The Texans acquired RB Samkon Gado, an undrafted free agent who led the Packers in rushing as a rookie last season, for RB Vernand Morency, who carried five times for 13 yards against the Eagles.
