The Kansas City Star reports former Broncos QB Bradlee Van Pelt worked out for the Chiefs on Wednesday. Van Pelt, the backup to Jake Plummer last year, got lost in the quarterback shuffle when the Broncos drafted Jay Cutler. Read more

Colts hurting on D

The Indianapolis Star reports injuries left the Indianapolis Colts thin along the defensive line for Wednesday's practice. It's uncertain if they will remain short-handed for Sunday's AFC South clash with Jacksonville in the RCA Dome. Among the players missing practice were three-time Pro Bowl DE Dwight Freeney (buttock), backup DE Josh Thomas (hip) and tackles Montae Reagor (knee) and Corey Simon (knee). HC Tony Dungy is optimistic Reagor will return to practice today and hopes Freeney is able to participate to some degree in workouts by week's end. Read more

Smith optimistic about his return

The Charlotte Observer reports he didn't practice with the team Wednesday, but Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith did return to the practice fields. He did some running on the adjoining field while practice was going on, practicing routes. Smith, who has missed both of Carolina's games and hasn't practiced since suffering a hamstring injury Sept. 5, is listed as questionable on the team's injury report for the game Sunday at Tampa Bay.
