Mangini hires quintet of coaches

AP reports Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini added five assistant coaches, four who were on his staff with the New York Jets. Mangini hired defensive line coach Bryan Cox, defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson, defensive quality control coach Andy Dickerson, quarterbacks coach Carl Smith and assistant strength and conditioning coach Rick Lyle on Thursday.

Browns coordinators close to signing, and already working

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Browns soon-to-be coordinators Rob Ryan and Brian Daboll have already been in Cleveland working on a preliminary basis in their new roles, a source said today. Ryan, the former Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator, is still in town and has been for several days. He hasn't formally been announced as the defensive coordinator yet, but it's expected to happen soon. Daboll, the former quarterbacks coach of the Jets, was in town over the weekend, but might be back in New York now. The Browns are close to signing both men, the source said. Read more

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports RB LaDainian Tomlinson Sunday missed his first-ever start due to injury. “It's not a good feeling,” he said afterward. Having to watch much of the Chargers' past four postseason games, sidelined last year by a sprained knee and this year by a torn tendon in his groin, has Tomlinson unsure but motivated about his future. “What I'm looking forward to is proving I can play every game again,” Tomlinson said after the Chargers' 35-24 playoff loss to Pittsburgh. “I've always prided myself more than anything on being there every game. For me, I want to get back to that point where I'm playing every game.” Read more

Reports: Dungy decides to retire

ESPN.com reports the Indianapolis Colts have scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon, presumably to announce the retirement of coach Tony Dungy. Foxsports.com and The Indianapolis Star reported Monday that Dungy, 53, will step down after seven seasons in Indianapolis. The news conference is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET at the team's practice facility, although the Colts did not given a reason early Monday for their announcement. Read more
