Jaguars' Owens re-signs

The Florida Times-Union reports special-teams ace Montell Owens, who was due to be a restricted free agent next month, signed a four-year contract with the Jaguars Wednesday that ties him to the team until 2013. Owens received a signing bonus in the $1 million range. Owens would have been a restricted free agent this year, which meant the Jaguars would have the opportunity to have matched any offer he got, but he probably wouldn't have become an unrestricted free agent until 2012. Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the news has been out for a couple of days, but Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo made it as official as it can get Thursday. He confirmed that Philadelphia's Pat Shurmur has been hired as offensive coordinator and Carolina's Ken Flajole has been hired as defensive coordinator of the Rams. Read more

Colts' search for defensive coordinator includes ex-Tampa assistant Coyer

The Indianapolis Star reports the Indianapolis Colts have discussed their defensive coordinator opening with veteran NFL assistant Larry Coyer, who has strong college ties to new coach Jim Caldwell. Coyer, 65, has spent the past two seasons in Tampa Bay, last year as assistant head coach to Jon Gruden, but was not retained when Gruden was fired last week. Before that Coyer spent seven seasons with the Denver Broncos, the last four as defensive coordinator. Read more

Bengals do 'Marvelous' job at Senior Bowl

The Dayton Daily News reports the Cincinnati Bengals coaching staff deserves some sort of medal for the way they conducted business with the Senior Bowl's North squad this week. In my seven years of covering the event, I have never seen anything like it, even when the Bengals coached here in 2004. Take nothing away from the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff that coached the South squad, but they were simply outdone. The Bengals staff prepared the unit as if they where preparing for the Super Bowl. I guess in so many ways this event is like the Super Bowl for many of the prospects participating. This is their last game as collegiate players before moving on to the next level — or not. The North practice was always spirited and up-tempo, but what was being taught on the field stood out the most. Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis was the physical presence while running backs coach Jim Anderson was the taskmaster's voice. When you heard Anderson's booming voice you knew class was in session.
