Jones named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Cleveland Browns S Sean Jones was named AFC Defensive Player-of-the-Week, the NFL announced this morning.  Jones was a key part of the Browns defense that forced three turnovers and limited the Jets to a season-low 193 net yards of total offense in the Browns 20-13 win last Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Holmes to see neurosurgeon

The Kansas City Star reports RB Priest Holmes may be hundreds of miles away from his teammates, but he still watches every game. And apparently he knows as much about the Chiefs’ offense as he did before the head and neck injuries that knocked him out of football a year ago. “When I talked to him two weeks ago,” Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said, “he saw the game when Larry (Johnson) got hurt and he asked how he was doing. “He said he still has the itch (to play).” Read more

Niners release Tucker

The Contra Costa Times reports the 49ers waived CB B.J. Tucker, who had been inactive for five of the team's seven games. And in a reshuffling of their practice squad, the 49ers released DT Sam Wilder and K Shaun Suisham and re-signed LB Renauld Williams, who was among their final training-camp cuts. If Tucker clears waivers, he could be re-signed to the practice squad. Read more

Merriman decides to drop suspension appeal

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Chargers LB Shawne Merriman had been leaning toward this decision for days, weighing the likelihood he could win a reversal of his suspension versus the desire to clear his name along with the question of what would be best for his team. In the end, he decided Tuesday to drop the appeal of his four-game suspension for a positive drug test. The NFL's leader in sacks with 8½, Merriman will not play Sunday against Cleveland, Nov. 12 at Cincinnati, Nov. 19 at Denver or Nov. 26 against Oakland. His first game back will be Dec. 3 at Buffalo.
