Cards sign Hayes to five-year extension

ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli reports Arizona Cardinals middle LB Gerald Hayes, who has emerged as a solid playmaker in his first season as a full-time starter, signed a five-year contract extension on Monday. The extension, which came on the last day for teams to sign players and count what would normally be signing bonuses as base salary toward the 2006 spending limit, is worth $21 million with $8 million guaranteed, ESPN's John Clayton reports. Eagles sign Cole to five-year extension

AP reports DE Trent Cole signed a five-year contract extension on Monday that could keep him with the Philadelphia Eagles through 2013. Cole is the second player drafted by the Eagles last year to receive a multiyear deal in the past week. Defensive tackle Mike Patterson got a seven-year extension worth $32 million last Thursday. Terms of Cole's contract weren't immediately known. Read more

Berrian out 2-4 weeks

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the last time the Bears' offense looked this bad, QB Rex Grossman missed a sure touchdown by overthrowing WR Bernard Berrian on the first play of the game against Arizona. This time Grossman just missed Berrian, period. The wide receiver suffered a painful rib injury on the first play of the game and likely will miss two to four weeks. Watching Berrian hunched over and holding his left side while painfully wheezing out answers to the media in the locker room, one would figure a month at least. Without the threat of a deep pass, the passing offense all but shut down and couldn't produce the kind of quick strike that might have brought the Bears back into the game. Read more

Williamson's drop costly

The Pioneer Press reports chaos encircled WR Troy Williamson in the locker room after the Vikings' 9-3 loss Sunday. To his right, veteran WR Travis Taylor, flanked by at least a half-dozen reporters, conducted an interview, and to his left were hurried staffers and teammates racing to catch the team bus to the airport. Williamson, though, sat catatonic at his locker, his shoulders slumped, his mind empty, his eyes staring into his empty stall. There was one reason: another costly drop. Read more
