Spine injury may end Mathis' career

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Falcons S Kevin Mathis' season is over after he suffered a possible career-ending injury to his spine in Sunday's loss to the Detroit Lions. Mathis was placed on injured reserve Monday. In a statement, the Falcons said Mathis is expected to make a full recovery, but because this is his second significant spinal injury in five years, his future playing the violent sport could be in jeopardy. The Houston Chronicle reports Texans HC Gary Kubiak can see that QB David Carr is making strides. He made plays with his feet in Sunday's 14-10 loss to the New York Giants. He held on to the ball a week after turning it over three times against the Tennessee Titans. And he almost led the Texans to a huge upset by giving them a lead heading into the fourth quarter against the Giants. Read more

The Florida Times-Union reports DT Marcus Stroud (ankle) likely is out this week, HC Jack Del Rio said on Monday, but should be available for Jacksonville's Nov. 20 game against the New York Giants. Read more

Bucs banged up

The Tampa Tribune reports the Bucs suffered two injuries in the loss to New Orleans that could affect their game against Carolina. Starting LB Shelton Quarles left in the third quarter with a high ankle sprain and RB Michael Pittman sustained a shoulder stinger late in the game. HC Jon Gruden said he is concerned about both players and they are questionable for Monday night's game against the Panthers. Read more
