Texans smart to extend GM Smith

The Dayton Daily News reports Earlier this month the Houston Texans signed general manager Rick Smith to a four-year contract extension keeping him with the team through 2012. This is a testament to the organization's commitment to winning as they continue to move the team in a positive direction. Smith, the former Meadowdale High School football star, is entering his third-year as the Texans GM and is quickly transforming the 2-14 team he took over in 2006 into a contender. During a phone interview with Smith he talked about the challenges of the position as GM and expectations of the new regime in Houston. Read more

Bengals to work out sleeper safety prospect

The Dayton Daily News reports Ohio University cornerback Mark Parson may have been the one hand-picked by future Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders to come train with him at Prime U, a pre-NFL combine camp, but teammate safety Michael Mitchell is proving to be the crown jewel of the Bobcats' secondary. The Cincinnati Bengals are among several teams wanting to get a closer look at the hard-hitting strong safety before draft day. Mitchell will have a private workout with the Bengals on April 14 and on the same day will fly to Cleveland to visit the Browns. A day later he'll travel to Oakland to meet with the Raiders. Mitchell has met with at least four other teams since his Pro Day March 12. Read more

Browns not guaranteed to land Orakpo

The Dayton Daily News reports the Cleveland defense finished the 2008 season tied for next to last in the NFL in sacks with 17, and the Browns will undoubtedly be looking to upgrade their pass-rush in the upcoming NFL draft. Many draft experts believe that University of Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo will be the Browns’ choice with the fifth overall selection in the draft.
