Kerney out with chest injury

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Falcons DE Patrick Kerney will be out for an extensive length of time with a chest injury suffered in Sunday's 17-13 loss to Cleveland, HC Jim Mora said Monday. Kerney had an MRI exam early Monday morning and the results were not known by the time Mora had his news conference. However, Mora said the team is preparing to not have Kerney any time soon, leaving the Falcons to play some, if not all, of their remaining seven games, with undrafted rookie Paul Carrington and training camp signee Josh Mallard to fill the void. Atlanta is not expected to sign a free agent to replace Kerney. Read more

Ellis out for season with torn Achilles

AP reports the Dallas Cowboys learned Monday that the outside LB Greg Ellis will miss the remainder of the season with a torn left Achilles tendon. Ellis suffered the injury late in the third quarter of Sunday's 27-10 win at Arizona. Read more

Givens lost for season

AP reports Tennessee WR David Givens tore a left knee ligament on a freak play Sunday when he planted his leg and will miss the rest of this season. Titans HC Jeff Fisher said Monday that Givens tore the anterior cruciate ligament. Read more

Portis breaks bone in right hand

The Washington Post reports Redskins RB Clinton Portis likely will miss about a month with a broken right hand, an injury that could end what has been a decidedly uneven season for him and his team. Bubba Tyer, the Redskins' director of sports medicine, said Portis would undergo surgery as soon as today to repair the fourth metacarpal bone in his right hand, which is the bone that runs below the ring finger. Tyer said Portis would have screws inserted to stabilize the bone, but that the injury would be particularly difficult for Portis, because as a running back he must be comfortable gripping the football. Portis is right-handed. Read more
