Rogers to miss sixth straight

The Detroit Free Press reports DT Shaun Rogers won't play for the sixth straight game. He isn't ready after having minor knee surgery during his four-game suspension for using a banned dietary supplement. If Rogers can't practice next week, will the Lions consider putting him on injured reserve, ending his season? "That consideration will always be there, because he needs a week or two weeks to at least get some work in," HC Rod Marinelli said. "So we'll see where he's at." Read more

Thomas gets extension

The Star-Ledger reports DE Bryan Thomas found a system that suited him and it has paid off handsomely. The defensive end/linebacker and the Jets agreed to a contract extension, it was announced yesterday. GM Mike Tannenbaum and Thomas' agents Brian Mackler and Alan Herman finalized terms on a five-year, $25 million extension that includes a $9 million signing bonus. The contract was the finishing touch on three days of negotiations that ended late Thursday night. Thomas was in the final year of his contract and would have become an unrestricted free agent in the off-season. Read more

Sanders poised to return

The Indianapolis Star reports if things go according to plan, and they haven't most of the season, Bob Sanders will start at safety alongside Marlin Jackson on Sunday, when the Indianapolis Colts can clinch the AFC South championship with a victory at Tennessee. "Best I've felt since before I got hurt," Sanders said after practice Friday. "I'm ready. I'm good. My body feels good. I'm excited. I was real encouraged going out today and feeling the way I felt." Sanders has played only one of the past nine games while recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He has been missed. Sanders is a Pro Bowl player whose speed and hitting energize the entire defense. Read more

Jags place Leftwich on IR

The Florida Times-Union reports the Jaguars placed QB Byron Leftwich on injured reserve Friday and signed CB David Richardson from the practice squad to the active roster. The roster move effectively erases any shot of Leftwich returning to the starting lineup should Jacksonville advance to the postseason. A fourth-year veteran, Leftwich underwent surgery on Nov. 21, presumably, to remove loose particles from his injured left ankle. Renowned orthopedic surgeon James Andrews performed the procedure in Birmingham, Ala., and Leftwich's recovery time is expected to take approximately six weeks. Read more
