Steelers release Staley

The Post-Gazette reports RB Duce Staley might finally help the Steelers this season by making room on the roster for someone else. The team yesterday released the veteran running back, who barely played this season. Faced with several injuries to starters who will not play Thursday night against Cleveland, the Steelers signed two of their former players -- WR Lee Mays and CB Chidi Iwuoma, their former special teams co-captain. McNabb back in Philly

The Trenton Times reports QB Donovan McNabb returned to Philadelphia after a week of post-operative rehabilitation in Birmingham, Ala., and planned on attending last night's game. McNabb will miss between 8-12 months following surgery last Tuesday to repair the anterior cruciate ligament and surround cartilage inside his right knee. Read more

The Charlotte Observer reports there was at least one bright light that endured after a Monday night that dulled the Carolina Panthers' playoff hopes. Rookie RB DeAngelo Williams had the best all-around performance of his season in the 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Williams led the Panthers in rushing (74 yards on 17 carries) and receiving (seven catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.). With five plays that gained double-digit yardage, he was Carolina's most consistent offensive spark on a night when WR Steve Smith was held to 54 yards and starting RB DeShaun Foster was out for the second straight week with an injured elbow. Gruden Putting Everyone On Notice

The Tampa Tribune reports QB Bruce Gradkowski is on notice. HC Jon Gruden put him there on Monday. The good news for Gradkowski, the Bucs' rookie quarterback, is this: He's not alone. WR Michael Clayton, who dropped what may have been the best of Gradkowski's 34 throws during the Bucs' 20-3 loss to the Steelers on Sunday, is on notice, too. So is RB Cadillac Williams, the second-year running back who dropped one ball, fumbled away another and twice was whistled for false starts Sunday, and everyone else who has yet to earn his NFL pedigree.
