The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Bears didn't let P Dirk Johnson get far. He remained holed up in town after being released Wednesday morning, and Friday the punter was re-signed in the event Brad Maynard's achy groin muscle prevents him from playing Sunday night against Dallas. Read more

Packers reward Tauscher

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers have renegotiated the final two years of OT Mark Tauscher's contract, giving him an additional $2.8 million in roster and workout bonuses, sources told the Journal Sentinel. GM Ted Thompson declined to confirm or deny the report, saying, "That's between us and Mark Tauscher." Tauscher wasn't available Friday during the period when the locker room was open to reporters, and then didn't return a request for a telephone interview. Read more

Caldwell may be active

The Washington Post reports WR Santana Moss participated in limited drills. Moss had hamstring and groin injuries in training camp, so the coaching staff is expected to give the seven-year veteran time off in practice this season. Recently signed WR Reche Caldwell was inactive against the Eagles, but might be active for tomorrow's game. Read more

The Trenton Times reports the most pivotal season of TE L.J. Smith's NFL career took another turn for the worse yesterday. Smith, who is the only starting tight end in the league eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in 2008, is out indefinitely after Dr. William Meyers performed a second surgical procedure in the area of Smith's groin yesterday morning.
