The San Diego Union-Tribune reports they never expected to be at this point, answering these questions, trying to squelch the doubts raining all around them and even bouncing around their own heads. Ward doubtful for Sunday's game

The Post-Gazette report WR Hines Ward is "doubtful" for Sunday's game against Arizona because of a sprained right knee, HC Mike Tomlin said yesterday. Starting C Sean Mahan also has a sprained knee, but Tomlin said Mahan is more likely to play because he is a lineman, not a receiver. Mahan was fitted with a brace during the San Francisco game and did not miss a snap. Rookie TE Matt Spaeth, the only Steelers player with two touchdowns, is probable after missing last week's game with a deep thigh bruise. Read more

Griese to start Sunday against Lions

ESPN.com reports QB Rex Grossman's latest meltdown reportedly will have him standing on the sidelines this week. The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and NFL.com, citing anonymous sources, reported on their Web sites that backup QB Brian Griese will replace Grossman as the starting quarterback when the Bears face the Lions. Chicago returns to practice on Wednesday to prepare for Sunday's game at Detroit. Read more
