San Francisco 49ers 10/03/2007 8:57 AMThe Mercury News reports 49ers QB Alex Smith is seeking a second opinion on his injured throwing shoulder, which might lead to season-ending surgery, according to an ESPN.com report. Smith will consult with Dr. James Andrews after preliminary MRI exam results indicated he appears to have suffered a serious injury to tendons in his right shoulder during a 23-3 loss to Seattle on Sunday, a source told ESPN.com. If the diagnosis performed at Stanford is confirmed by Andrews, the source said, Smith is expected to have corrective surgery immediately even though he would probably miss the rest of the season.Read more

Pittsburgh Steelers 10/03/2007 8:52 AMThe Post-Gazette reports S Troy Polamalu and NT Casey Hampton, the Steelers' two defensive Pro Bowl players who left Sunday's game in Arizona with injuries, will return to play against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Heinz Field. "We expect both those guys to be OK," HC Mike Tomlin said yesterday. Polamalu left the game with a strained abdomen and Hampton left with a hamsting injury.
