Brown optimistic about knee injury

The Times Picayune reports Saints OT Jammal Brown appears to have avoided major injury after his lower left leg was bent backward during Sunday's loss to the St. Louis Rams at the Superdome. Brown said Monday that he injured his tibia, but it was not broken. Saints Coach Sean Payton described the injury as a muscle strain. Both were optimistic that he could return to practice this week to prepare for Sunday's game at Houston. Read more

Shanahan defends Henry

The Denver Post reports a little anxious, Mike Shanahan nearly tipped forward out of his chair. The Broncos coach chose his Monday press gathering to publicly defend RB Travis Henry, his more well-known, if second-best running back. Second-best? RB Selvin Young has forced the discussion. Shortly into Shanahan's question-and-answer session, Henry came up. Only it was about his health. Health? Shanahan didn't want to talk about a bum knee when Henry's career hinges on whether he can beat what he says is a bum rap. Henry is facing a one-year suspension after a urine sample taken in early September tested positive for marijuana. His hearing with the NFL will be Friday afternoon in Phoenix. After goading the media into asking the question that until now had been considered off limits, Shanahan leaned slightly forward in his chair, pulled up his dress socks and let the world know he has Henry's back. Hip still slowing Boldin

The Arizona Republic reports Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin acknowledged recently that a hip injury likely will keep him from being 100 percent for the remainder of the season. His statistics since his return suggest that he might be missing some explosiveness. Boldin has played in the past three games after missing three games because of the injury. Since his return, he has caught 14 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns. That sometimes has been a day's work for him. "He had a severe injury, and he worked hard to get back from it," coach Ken Whisenhunt said, "but your body can't recover, especially when you're out here pounding it every day in practice and in games. Taylor out Indefinitely with sprained right knee

The Washington Post reports S Sean Taylor will be out indefinitely after spraining his right knee in the Washington Redskins' 33-25 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. An MRI exam yesterday confirmed that Taylor, who leads the Redskins with five interceptions, has a Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, said Bubba Tyer, director of sports medicine. "He's going to be out at least two weeks," Tyer said. "From there, we'll take it week to week and see how he does." Read more
