Cardinals lose Berry for rest of season

The Arizona Republic reports the Cardinals confirmed Tuesday morning that defensive end/outside linebacker Bertrand Berry suffered a torn left triceps and is out for the year. Berry suffered the injury last Sunday against Detroit and will finish his third straight season on injured reserve. He missed 14 games the past two seasons with a torn pectoral muscle and a torn right triceps. He said on KTAR-AM (620) he's not considering retirement. Read more

Colts lose Freeney for rest of season

The Indianapolis Star reports the latest injury might be the most damaging to the Indianapolis Colts, who apparently have lost DE Dwight Freeney for the rest of the season. The three-time Pro Bowl defensive end probably faces surgery to repair damage to his left foot, according to a source close to Freeney. The Colts have made no announcement on the nature of the injury, which occurred during the fourth quarter of Sunday night's loss at San Diego. Read more

Nolan agrees with TE Davis' assessment

The Mercury News reports in thinly veiled criticism of his beleaguered offensive coordinator, 49ers Coach Mike Nolan said Tuesday that he also was dismayed by TE Vernon Davis' lack of involvement in the offense during a 24-0 loss Monday night at Seattle. "Vernon is a playmaker for us and we need to utilize him," Nolan said. "In this game, we regressed in that respect." Read more

Defense is what's hindering Browns the most

The Dayton Daily News reports it doesn't help the Browns that they fumble away time-outs, but this commotion about Sunday's clock management fiasco only serves to obscure the real problem: Their defense is horrible. If anything keeps the Browns out of the playoffs — they are a game behind the AFC wild-card pace — it will be their inability to stop anyone on a consistent basis. HC Romeo Crennel is 2-for-21 on replay challenges in his three years on the job. Embarrassing as that is, he should be more embarrassed by his team's dead-last ranking in overall defense, especially considering this is the area in which he made his reputation. Read more
