Jeremy Shockey, Giants huddle up

The New York Daily News reports TE Jeremy Shockey and the Giants offense held a players-only meeting earlier this week. Shockey wouldn't say yesterday what was discussed - Eli Manning's four picks last week may have come up - but it was clear there was concern following Sunday's 41-17 debacle against the Vikings. Shockey said players talked about "things that we can do to improve in the areas that we need to. We need to do it fast." Read more

Alexander will start for Seahawks

The Seattle Times reports RB Shaun Alexander will start for the Seahawks when they play at Philadelphia on Sunday, coach Mike Holmgren said Friday after practice. Alexander was able to practice all week. He had to go through an entire week of practice on his sprained knee and sore ankle before Holmgren would allow him to return to game action. Alexander also has a cracked left wrist and has missed the past three games. Read more

Huard to start at QB for Chiefs

The Kansas City Star reports the expected became official Friday afternoon, when Chiefs coach Herm Edwards announced that Damon Huard will start at quarterback on Sunday against the Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium. QB Brodie Croyle was injured early in last week’s loss to Oakland, and his back was too stiff to participate in practice this week. Huard, who started the first nine games, has completed 163 of 262 passes (62.2 percent) for 1,766 yards and eight touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Croyle has completed 58 of 97 (59.8 percent) for 614 yards, two touchdowns at two interceptions. Read more

Russell one step closer to playing

The Mercury News reports QB JaMarcus Russell, the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft in April, might finally make his Raiders debut Sunday against the Denver Broncos. Nothing is official. It's just that Russell seems closer to playing than at any point since he was added to the 53-man roster before Oakland's fourth game. The quarterbacks ahead of him, Daunte Culpepper and Josh McCown, are hindered by injuries, though Culpepper is expected to play. Read more
