Packers name Murphy CEO

The Milwaukee Sentinel reports Mark H. Murphy, who will take over as president and chief executive officer of the Green Bay Packers after the season ends, knows people view him as an outsider taking over a storied franchise. But Murphy said Monday that his varied background - as a player, an athletic director, a lawyer and a former member of the National Football League Players Association - will serve the Packers' franchise well in the years to come. "I really believe this position offers me an opportunity to bring together all of the skills I have developed," Murphy said. In a meeting with reporters and in a short interview afterward, Murphy said he would take the first 100 days of his administration to focus on meeting and talking with Packers employees, meeting with team Chairman Bob Harlan and the board of directors, and visiting with fans. Fox shelters Carr from fans' fury

The Charlotte Observer reports QB David Carr, who signed a lucrative contract in the offseason to become the Carolina Panthers' backup quarterback, is now No. 3, sitting behind two players who were not on the roster when he signed. The change became official Sunday, when he was the third quarterback and inactive, behind starter Vinny Testaverde and new backup Matt Moore, a rookie. Carr's struggles had sparked the wrath of home fans, and Panthers coach John Fox on Monday said that had something to do with the decision. Read more

Green's season may end early for Texans

The Houston Chronicle reports with more injuries hitting the Texans, the team is no longer able to waste a roster spot each week on RB Ahman Green if he isn't going to play. Green, who has a knee injury and was inactive for the sixth time Sunday, will practice this week. Coach Gary Kubiak said a decision will then be made regarding Green's status for the rest of the season. Read more
