Losing out on $20M no big deal to Briggs

The Chicago Sun-Times reports LB Lance Briggs was walking off the practice field Tuesday evening when he was asked his thoughts on facing his might-have-been team Thursday. Briggs crunched his brow in confusion. ''What do you mean?'' he said. The Washington Redskins offered a swap of first-round picks with the Bears in an effort to get Briggs. The team that reportedly agreed to give him $20 million in guaranteed money as part of a multiyear deal that would average $7.5 million per season if they could reach a trade agreement with the Bears. The Buffalo News reports RB Marshawn Lynch has been making progress and could be available Sunday against the Dolphins after suffering a high-ankle sprain in his last meeting with Miami. He participated in a light workout Friday. HC Dick Jauron hoped to know more today. Read more

Haynes may be enlisted

The Post-Gazette reports the Steelers yesterday worked out RB Verron Haynes and were discussing last night whether to sign him to their 53-man roster. Haynes was released by the Steelers after training camp. He was originally a fifth-round draft pick by the team in 2002 then re-signed with the Steelers in the offseason in '06. Read more

Holmes, Polamalu, Smith hope to play

The Post-Gazette reports the Steelers could welcome the return of three injured starters this week as they prepare to play the unbeaten New England Patriots Sunday. WR Santonio Holmes, SS Troy Polamalu and left OT Marvel Smith all could start against the Patriots, coach Mike Tomlin said. Each has missed the past two games -- Holmes with a high ankle sprain, Polamalu with a sprained knee and Smith with a disc problem in his back. Read more
