San Diego Chargers
12/08/2007 9:02 AM
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Chargers coach Norv Turner said it's 50-50 whether All-Pro outside LB Shawne Merriman will plays Sunday at Tennessee. The AFC defensive player of the week disagrees. “Yeah, I'll be good,” Merriman said Friday after sitting out practice a second straight day to rest his ailing right calf. He injured it Sunday against Kansas City, when he had three sacks to push his season total to 9½. “It's calming down. I went out there Wednesday and did a couple of things, but Thursday and today I didn't do much. “It's feeling good now. I'm just doing this as a precaution.” Read more

Mums the word on QB Smith

San Francisco 49ers
12/08/2007 8:59 AM
The Mercury News reports the 49ers were no closer Friday to a decision on whether QB Alex Smith would return this season. And HC Mike Nolan is in no hurry to set a timetable for Smith, whose activity at practice this week was limited to tossing a few short passes on the side. "I'm relying on the medical staff," Nolan said. "They said give him light throwing. He did light throwing. Our planning as a coaching staff is based on the medical staff and we can't go any further than that." Nolan was then asked if he thought Smith - who likely will be deactivated for a third consecutive week - would play in any of the team's remaining four games. "Can't go there," he said. "I don't know. I was surprised when he went out. I've just got to go on what they tell me each week. It's out of my area. I've got a quarterback. I've got a backup. If they give me another one back, then we'll deal with it." Read more

The Arizona Republic reports the availability of receivers Anquan Boldin (toe) and Larry Fitzgerald (groin) won't be determined until Sunday morning before the game in Seattle, HC Ken Whisenhunt said. Boldin missed a third consecutive day of practice Friday, but did some jogging on the side. Fitzgerald ran routes in practice and is more likely to play Sunday than Boldin. Both are listed as questionable. Read more

Season ends for injured Hope

Tennessee Titans
12/08/2007 8:54 AM
The Nashville Tennessean reports as the Titans flew home from Cincinnati two weeks ago after a 35-6 loss, LB Keith Bulluck and S Chris Hope chatted, but not about the game. The topic was Hope's health. The veteran had gone down in the first quarter with an injury that caused an arm and a leg to twitch involuntarily as he lay face down on the turf, a disturbing scene for teammates and viewers. "It was real scary," Bulluck said. A battery of tests finally revealed Hope suffered a spinal cord injury, Titans Coach Jeff Fisher said Friday. The injury isn't career ending, the coach said, but Hope's season is over. Read more
