Bucs shut out of Pro Bowl

The Tampa Tribune reports two days after clinching the NFC South title, the Bucs were shut out of the Pro Bowl. Tampa Bay failed to place a player on the NFC roster for the Feb. 10 game at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. The Bucs have had at least one participant in the Pro Bowl every season since 1996. Outside LB Derrick Brooks was not named Tuesday, placing his streak of 10 consecutive Pro Bowl berths in jeopardy. Selectors chose Seattle's Julian Peterson and DeMarcus Ware as NFC starters, with Chicago's Lance Briggs in reserve. CB Ronde Barber has appeared in four Pro Bowls, including the last three, but Green Bay's Al Harris and Seattle's Marcus Trufant will start for the NFC Feb. 10, backed by Terence Newman of Dallas. DT Young placed on IR

The Times-Picayune reports the Saints placed DT Brian Young on injured reserve Tuesday, officially ending his 2007 season. Young was hospitalized last week with a rare case of pneumonia, and he had fluid drained from between his chest cavity and his lungs. Saints Coach Sean Payton said Monday that doctors were able to diagnose the condition, and Young is getting better. But he said the illness would require some recovery time. Read more

Rucker ponders life after football

The Charlotte Observer reports there's been no big announcement, mainly because there's been no decision, but Carolina Panthers DE Mike Rucker knows Saturday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys could be his last at Bank of America Stadium. A fixture on Carolina's defensive line since he came into the league as a second-round draft choice in 1999, Rucker said he'll wait until after the season to decide if wants to keep playing. He admits he's been giving some thought to the alternative. Read more

Pro Bowl anoints Peters

The Buffalo News reports OL Jason Peters’ career at left tackle is only 23 games old, but he’s already a Pro Bowler.  Peters on Tuesday became the 14th Buffalo Bills offensive lineman to be selected for the Pro Bowl and the first since Ruben Brown in 2003. Peters has started the last 39 games for the Bills as a tackle — including the last 23 at left tackle. Peters and New England’s OT Matt Light were named starters at tackle while Baltimore’s OT Jonathan Ogden was named a reserve. Read more
