Smith may be thrown into action

The Baltimore Sun reports two days after he remained committed to QB Kyle Boller as his starting quarterback, Ravens coach Brian Billick acknowledged that his plans might have to change. With Boller feeling lingering effects from a concussion, QB Troy Smith could make his first NFL start Sunday when the Ravens play the Seahawks in Seattle. Boller did not practice yesterday and was sent home after meetings because he is still experiencing headaches and sensitivity to light. Read more

Some injured players return

The Post-Gazette reports the Steelers welcomed the return of several injured players to their practice yesterday morning, including some starters. CB Ike Taylor, who left the game Sunday against Jacksonville with a knee injury, went through a full practice after missing practice Tuesday. He likely will start at cornerback. DE Travis Kirschke (ribs) also put in a full practice and, like Taylor, is listed as probable and should start. LB Clark Haggans (knee) is listed as questionable, even though he went through a full practice yesterday. Read more

Parcells' friendship with Huizenga sways the deal

The Palm Beach Post reports Bill Parcells reached an agreement Wednesday to run the Dolphins' football operations, a source close to negotiations told The Palm Beach Post. The source said Parcells, winner of two Super Bowls as coach of the New York Giants, entertained the idea because of his friendship with Wayne Huizenga and insisted the Dolphins owner, who has been in discussions to sell, retain control of the team. Parcells, 66, would be in charge of everything related to what happens on the field and decide the fates of General Manager Randy Mueller and coach Cam Cameron. A contract had not been signed as of Wednesday night, but the source said there was "an understanding" in place between Parcells and Huizenga. Read more

This wasn't Parcells' first dalliance with Falcons

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Bill Parcells is no stranger to taking the Falcons to the wedding altar and then running away. Just call him the runaway-football coach/executive. Back in 1987, Parcells' agent Robert Fraley got the Falcons, then owned by Rankin Smith Sr., to give him a $900,000 offer. Parcells was making only $325,000 and coming off a victory over Denver in Super Bowl XXI. The only problem was that Parcells was under contract with the Giants through 1988, and commissioner Pete Rozelle ordered that the negotiations cease. Parcells and Fraley ended up working out a new, lucrative deal with the Giants. Read more
