Rookie improving

The Boston Herald reports Patriots HC Bill Belichick talked about the progression and improvement of rookie DB Brandon Meriweather. “He’s improved through the course of the year and there’s still a lot of things he needs to work on,” Belichick said, “but I think he gives us good depth at the position. I’d like to see him catch the ball a little better, but . . . he’s around it and I think he’s making progress.” Meriweather was asked about his coach’s remarks. “I have a lot to improve on. I’m still learning how to be a pro and do all the little things right,” he said. “I’m still not even close to where the program wants me to be or where I want to be as a player. For coach to say something like that I have to just take it in stride. I’m happy he feels like I’m improving, but I have a lot of work to do.” Read more

Davis gets Eagles' deal

The Trenton Times reports with CB Lito Sheppard hobbled all season by a knee injury and FS Brian Dawkins expected to sit out Sunday's season finale against the Buffalo Bills with a foot sprain, the Eagles yesterday signed CB Tanard Davis to a four- year contract and released WR Michael Gasperson after a short-lived stay on the 53-man roster. Romo likely to be limited

The Star-Telegram reports Cowboys QB Tony Romo wants to play the entire game Sunday at Washington. That's not likely, but it remains unclear how much coach Wade Phillips is willing to risk putting his franchise quarterback on the field with nothing riding on the outcome. Romo is still nursing a bruised right thumb, which didn't seem to bother him against Carolina. Phillips has not indicated how much other key personnel will play against the Redskins. Read more

Burress returns to practice

The Star-Ledger reports WR Plaxico Burress practiced yesterday for the first time since early November. All season, Burress has been battling ankle and knee injuries that have kept him sidelined during the week and have often hampered his performance on Sundays. But Burress said his ankle is improving and coach Tom Coughlin said before practice "there's not much risk of a setback, so we're going to try it." Read more
