CINCINNATI — Improving the running game is one of the major goals in Cincinnati this season.
In the offseason, the Bengals signed former New England Patriots running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis to replace unemployed Cedric Benson as the feature back. Bernard Scott should not be overlooked, though, because he has added incentive to perform this season.
"It’s my contract year and I’m trying to put good things on tape every time I touch the field," Scott said during minicamp Tuesday. "We just have to let it play out. I don’t know what’s going to happen but hopefully I’m here. If not, I must have things on film for other job opportunities."
Scott is entering the final year of his rookie contract and fourth season with the Bengals and this could be his make it or break it year. Scott rushed for 380 yards and three touchdowns last season while splitting time with Benson. This season will offer more of the same with the ground attack fueled by a two rotation running-backs-by-committee. Only this time the carries will be shared with Green-Ellis.
"What I’ve seen so far we complement each other," Scott said. "I think his running style and my style is going to benefit this offense. He’s got some moves and can break to the outside as well as catch the ball out of the backfield. I think we’re a tandem to keep an eye on and believe things will work out for the best."
Scott’s versatility adds another element to the running game. He has the instincts, speed, quickness and athleticism to make big plays. Scott also has the ability to play special teams, but his duties have been limited during Organized Team Activities and minicamp. This allowed him time to focus on improving his pass protection over the offseason. It’s important for Scott to make the most of the reps he will receive, but at the same time understand that egos must be put aside for the success of the team. Expectations are high and teams will be gunning for Bengals this season.
"We expect a lot out of ourselves," he said. "We don’t mind having a target on our chest. That’s just going to bring the best out in you. Each week we’re going to have people coming after our necks, but we just have to be on our A-game. We’re hungry and out to prove last year was no fluke."
