Browns emphasizing defensive play during offseason

BEREA — The Cleveland Browns high-powered offense is generally the topic of conversation when you hear talk of the team. But with the organization addressing the defensive side of the ball heavily during the off-season, with key acquisitions Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams, talks could swing the other way and the defense may soon start to get some love.

There is no doubt that defense is gaining ground on the highly publicized offense and it showed during training camp over the weekend.

Defense

The trade for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers appears to be paying quick dividends. Rogers totally destroyed a stout Browns offensive line on nearly every play. Center Hank Fraley had his hands full trying to stop the 6-4, 350-pounder from getting past the O-line. Rogers is extremely quick for a man his size and plays with good leverage. Once the wide-body gets moving forward there is no driving him back, unless you have got a tow truck on hand.

Linebacker Andra Davis was on top of his game. He showed outstanding pursuit and was in on just about every play. Davis played like a man with something to prove, flying around the field like a jackrabbit.

Cornerback Eric Wright was by far the best corner on display. He locked on to receivers like a leech, matching them stride for stride. Wright had a number of pass break-ups and did a nice job finding the ball in the air. I only saw him get beat once deep, going against Braylon Edwards. Wright was very graceful and light on his feet, essential attributes for a top-ranked corner.
