The Cleveland Browns have been relatively quiet since making a big splash in free agency, but with the NFL draft one day away, early rumbles of a tidal wave can be heard rolling in once again. The Browns do not have a pick until the fourth-round of Saturday’s draft and are reportedly satisfied with waiting until the 122nd overall pick to make their selection. The organization has a draft day plan and word is that it’s a pretty good one.

The team will have its eyes on a number of prospects that should be available on day two of the draft and one prospect in particular, Ohio University S Todd Koenig.

Koenig is an intriguing prospect who has received a significant amount of interest from NFL teams as of late. Houston, New England and Indianapolis are among the teams who have shown interest in the hard-hitting safety.

However, no team has expressed as much interest as the Browns. In fact, higher-ups within the organization have made contact with Koenig and are likely to make him a late-round selection. If nothing else, the Browns might sign him as an undrafted free agent.Todd Koenig

Koenig began popping up on team’s radar after impressing scouts at the school’s Pro Day in March when he ran in the high 4.4’s in the 40-yard dash and was exceptional during position drills. He did 13 reps on the bench press and posted a 33-inch vertical jump. After his performance, teams were forced to watch film and what they found was a John Lynch clone.

“I started watching film on Lynch when I was a freshman because we run the same defense as Tampa Bay,” Koenig said. “The more I watched him the more it rubbed off on me. It was just him getting some licks in and I built that into my style of play. I love being in the zone and being able to read the quarterback and routes, and to get some good hits in, there’s nothing better than that.”

The 6-foot-2, 217-pound sledge hammer made a college career out of busting opponents in the mouth and loves doing it. Koenig led the Bobcats in tackles with 98 stops and also in pass-breakups with 10, showing his versatility dropping back into coverage and defending the pass.

Koenig’s blue-collar mentality is a perfect fit for the Browns defense. He’s an explosive hitter with good range and natural athletic ability. He is always around or in on a tackle and can play both safety positions. Koenig is smart and makes good decisions and can lead a defense. He’s a consistent player and is very durable.

I think Bobcats defensive coordinator Jimmy Burrow describes him best.

“Todd is a leader that we will miss,” coach Burrow said. “He’s a physical player that can do it all. Todd always liked to be around the line of scrimmage so he can mix it up and was a sure-tackler. He’s a very aggressive player. He has speed and I believe that’s one thing that interests NFL teams. There is a lot of talent there with Todd.”

If Koenig is indeed in the Browns draft day plans it appears that this could be one Special Brownie.
