With the NFL draft less than a week away, whispers continue to seep out of Atlanta that higher ups in the Falcons organization are smitten with Louisville QB Brian Brohm and could consider taking the passer in the first-round on draft day April 26-27.

Two weeks ago, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank rounded up the posse, general manager Thomas Dimitroff, head coach Mike Smith, offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, and traveled to Louisville to get one last look at Brohm before D-day.

The five distinguished gentleman stood in observance as the quarterback auditioned for the team who owns the third overall pick in this year’s draft. Brohm went through about an hour workout and sat down with the group for another hour to have his brain dissected.Brian Brohm

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Falcons’ decision-makers came away very impressed with Brohm both on and off the field. Brohm’s knowledge of the game is said to be second to none and his passing skills is more than to be desired.

Brohm has taken a Rodney King like beating from some of the draft experts, but there are some NFL scouts who feel that he is worthy of Top 10 consideration.

Talking to one Jacksonville Jaguars scout, who admitted to checking out some of the prospects rankings on the internet, said he found it completely absurd when he saw that Delaware QB Joe Flacco was rated higher than Brohm after the career numbers he put up. The scout said he had to chuckle and is rooting for Brohm because he appears to be the underdog in this year’s quarterback class. Jacksonville is expected to take a look at the quarterbacks in the draft but not in the first-round where the scout believes that Brohm will go.

As for the Falcons, they may have designs on Brohm, but they are not alone.

The Baltimore Ravens is another team who is hot on the trail of the quarterback. Brohm worked out for the team in Louisville last Sunday and a day later flew to Baltimore to meet with the organization. The Ravens are switching to the West Coast offense under new head coach John Harbaugh and Brohm would be a prime candidate to run the offense that he is so very familiar with.

The Ravens could set the draft on end should they decide to make Brohm their pick with the No. 8 selection.

Other teams who are showing a considerable amount of interest in Brohm are the Minnesota Vikings with the No. 17 pick and Tampa Bay at No. 20. Neither team would hesitate to pull the trigger to select the quarterback if he’s available.

So where does that leave Atlanta?

The Falcons may feel that the third overall pick is too high to take Brohm, but with the fear of him not being available in round two the team could orchestrate a deal by packaging up picks and hightailing it back into the first-round to snag the quarterback. The Falcons have three second-round picks 34, 37 and 48 overall and could be the leverage needed to make their move.

Ladies and gentlemen, let the draft begin!
