The Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns know one another all too well with each team trying to keep up with the Jones’ when filling their rosters. So far this offseason, the Browns are ahead of the game after masterfully working the free agent signing period, but the Bengals will be looking to gain some ground on their in state division rival during the upcoming draft.
Both teams are expected to address their secondary in the draft and Cleveland turned up the heat in their search for help putting three cornerback prospects under the microscope last week. The Browns worked out Darnell Terrell (Missouri), Tyvon Branch (Connecticut) and Orlando Scandrick (Boise State).
I’m not quite sure what the Bengals have been up to in terms of working out prospects, but I did receive information that the team made contact with the agent for Indiana CB Leslie Majors to discuss him in detail.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Majors is a feisty cornerback that plays much bigger than his size would indicate. When watching film on Majors there is no denying that he’s a player. He reminds me a lot of veteran NFL CB Aaron Glenn.
Majors showed out at the school’s Pro Day banging out 11 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press and ran in the high 4.4 range in the 40-yard dash. He posted a 36.5-inch vertical jump and 10.4-inch broad jump.
Majors was also stellar during position drills and members of the Bengals and Browns organizations stayed afterward to work the cornerback out some more.
During the college season opponents often went away from teammate Indiana star CB Tracy Porter, who is projected to go as early as the second-round, thinking they would have more success going after Majors, but he proved to be a force to be reckoned with.
Majors gave up only three touchdowns in the ‘07 season and none of the receivers would be considered a slouch. Michigan State Devin Thomas, Oklahoma State Adarius Bowman and Purdue's Jake Standeford were the three who managed to score while being defended by the scrappy Majors, who took it personally.
“I hate to be scored on,” he said “It’s one thing to catch a short 5-yard pass and come up to make the tackle, but getting into the end zone that’s just something I can’t allow.”
Majors had 62 tackles, 42 of which were solo, and two interceptions for the 2007 season. He led the team in pass break-ups with six and was a major contributor on special-teams.
I think the four year starter described himself best.
“I’m a football player,” Majors said. “In order to play the game you have to be able to block and tackle. That’s a part of the game, tackling in the open-field, between the tackles, no matter what. Despite my size that’s what I do. That’s what I love.”
Majors is currently working out with New England Patriots veteran S Rodney Harrison, who is helping him to prepare for the next level. Majors said when the two work out together at Quads Gym in Southside Chicago where they both are from, they go at it pretty hard.
While the Bengals and Browns share a common interest in Majors there is another division foe who has their eye on him and that the Baltimore Ravens. Right now, Majors is flying under the radar but with other NFL teams starting to show interest he could be a hot commodity in the later rounds on draft day.
Big C's Scouting Report:
Majors shows good instinct and fights off blocks well. He’s very aggressive and is a guy who loves to hit. He has a seek-and-destroy mentality. Majors is a great open-field tackler and does an incredible job coming up to support the run. He has good strength for his size and good straight-line speed. He has good change-of-direction and shows nice hips to flip and run with receivers. He has above average cover skills and he is a quick study in the film room. He’s an ideal cornerback for a cover-2 defense. Majors is a confident play with a lot of heart.
