The Cleveland Browns do not have a selection until the 23rd pick of the fourth-round in the upcoming NFL draft, but that hasn't stopped the team from compiling a wish list of prospects to bring in for visits. Looking to shore up a questionable secondary, the team is prepared to take action.
The Browns are expected to have Arizona State S Josh Barrett in for a visit later this month. Barrett is an intriguing prospect with a rare combination of size, speed and overall athleticism. Many NFL scouts are comparing him to Washington Redskins rookie safety LaRon Landry, who the team selected with the sixth overall pick in the '07 draft. Not certain if Barrett will be around when it is time for the Browns to make their selection because he is en fuego.
The 6-foot-2 223-pound Barrett has been on the rise since his performance at the Combine, when he lit up the track in Indy, running a 4.35 in the 40-yard dash. The fleet footed safety continued to elevate his draft status with a solid performance at the school's Pro Day March 7. Barrett stood on his numbers from the Combine doing only position drills at the school workout and looked superb doing so. Barrett wanted to show the 25 NFL teams who were in attendance that he ranks among the top safeties entering the draft.
"I wanted to show scouts my versatility, fluidness when doing position drills, and the way I come out of my breaks, all the things they wanted to see," Barrett said. "I also wanted to answer any questions concerning past injuries."
Barrett sustained a couple of injuries — shoulder, MCL sprain — during his college career and received a clean bill of health from doctors at the Combine.
The hard hitter was a dominant force on defense for the Sun Devils and could provide the Browns with another Dawg in the defensive backfield. Barrett had a monster year in '06, posting 82 tackles and three interceptions. His production dipped a bit in '07 largely due to the sprained MCL that limited him to 11 games.
Barrett played strong safety at Arizona State but has the ability to play free safety as well. He doesn't see himself playing one or the other, but will do whatever it takes to get on the field.
"Wherever I can fit in on a defense whether it's strong safety or free safety, I am willing to do," Barrett said. "I know immediately it is going to be on special-teams. I'm going in with the mindset that I am more than willing to find my niche on a team at either position."
The Browns organization is not clowning around when it comes to addressing their needs this offseason and here is one prime prospect that the team will have their eye on.
