Betts preparing for dogfight for job with Colts

Former Miami RedHawk quarterback and Vandalia native Josh Betts could be in for the fight of his life when he reports to training camp with the Super Bowl Champion Colts this summer.

Betts spent last season on the team's practice squad and is now looking to earn a spot on the active roster, which is a feat itself considering the Colts usually like to carry two quarterbacks, Peyton Manning and Jim Sorgi, on the roster.

The team made things more difficult for Betts this off-season when it added another signal-caller to the mix. The Colts signed veteran QB John Navarre, who spent the last three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, which should make for an interesting battle at the No. 3 quarterback position.

However, Betts appears to have the upper-hand for the third-string job after having spent one year in the team's offense, and is practice squad eligible where as Navarre is not. Even with that in his favor, Betts is not taking things lightly. He knows that he will have his work cut out for him in training camp and has taken the necessary steps to improve his game.

Lots of lifting

On any given day over the course of the off-season, Betts could be found in the weight room hitting the weights like Lou Ferrigno trying to get stronger. When he wasn't getting his pump on, Betts could be found on the practice field perfecting his craft. That's throwing the football.

Betts said that he trained very hard this off-season improving his arm-strength, accuracy and overall consistency as a passer. As for learning the Colts' complex offense he believes that things are starting to come together.

"I'm getting more and more comfortable in the offense each day," Betts said. "I welcome the competition in camp. I'm a competitor, and ready to compete."

You could hear the confidence in Betts' voice and how he wants to prove to the coaching staff that he belongs. Betts said that he's not ready to give up without a fight and sees himself on some team if not with the Colts. Simply put, Betts is ready to throw down.

Get ready to rumble

If you take a look at the big picture, Navarre's presence in camp may not be to challenge only Betts, but backup quarterback Sorgi as well.

Sorgi signed a restricted free agent 1-year tender with the club in April and will become an unrestricted free agent after the season. Sorgi could command a little change on the open market so the heat could be on.

Remember, the Colts are a team strapped for cash and with "Baby Hercules," safety Bob Sanders, in the last year of his contract, the team could look for some relief in the unlikeliest of places.

Believe me there is a method to the madness of the team bringing in another quarterback to compete for a job and it will all be resolved in a heated battle during training camp.
