Coach Zimmer motivates Bengals defense

The Dayton Daily News reports the Cincinnati Bengals are building a foundation on defense upon which championship teams are made. The unit consists of exuberant youth and crafty veterans with a strong desire to win. There is talent at every position, and the players seem to respond well to the stern coaching of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. His coaching philosophy has made all the difference for this defense.

The Dayton Daily News reports newly acquired Bengals wideout Terrell Owens has been the topic of discussion at training camp since joining the team last week. The six-time Pro Bowl receiver made headlines when he signed a one-year contract worth $2 million with Cincinnati. He could earn an additional $2 million in incentives. Sources: Rams intensify Owens talks

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports the St. Louis Rams have intensified discussions in hopes of signing free agent Terrell Owens, according to sources close to the player and team. The Rams asked Owens through his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, if he would consider a serious contract proposal, even though they are not considered a playoff contender. Rosenhaus told the team Owens would definitely consider it, sources said. A high-ranking Rams official said a formal offer for Owens could come on Monday.

Giants sign linebacker Bulluck

ESPN.com reports free-agent linebacker Keith Bulluck officially joined the New York Giants on Saturday, after nailing a private workout Monday in the oppressive Meadowlands heat. But he unofficially joined them in March in the cold Manhattan rain.Coming off ACL surgery just seven months ago, with no team to supervise his recovery, Bulluck spent most of his spring rehabbing in New York. In the process, he fell back in love with the city of his youth -- and signed Saturday with the Giants, making it the city of his immediate future.

Mangold won't be training-camp holdout

ESPN reports All-Pro center Nick Mangold has expressed frustration over the team's unwillingness to negotiate a contract extension, but he indicated Friday night that he's not planning a training-camp holdout. "It doesn't seem to me to do any good to do it, so I'll be there with bells on," Mangold told the NFL Network. The Jets report Aug. 1 to camp in Cortland, N.Y. In last month's minicamp, Mangold hinted that he might be a no-show for training camp. He's entering the final year of a five-year contact, due to make $3.3 million. He's looking for long-term security, but the Jets have used the uncertain labor situation as the reason for not wanting to extend Mangold.
