San Francisco 49ers 12/14/2007 9:22 AMThe Mercury News reports two-and-a-half months after separating his right shoulder in a game against Seattle, 49ers QB Alex Smith underwent surgery Thursday to reattach ligaments. The operation was performed in Birmingham, Ala., by Dr. James Andrews, one of the nation's top orthopedic surgeons. "I heard it went as planned," Coach Mike Nolan said. Smith, 23, was placed on injured reserve this week, ending his season. He returned to play a month after suffering the shoulder separation. But after playing ineffectively in three games, Smith pulled himself out of action in mid-November, saying the shoulder had never stopped bothering him.Read more
