Jones-Drew a Monday night football special

This week's Monday night game between the 5-0 Indianapolis Colts and 4-1 Jacksonville Jaguars may be the best match-up yet with two inter division rivals set to do battle.

The World Champion Colts travel to Jacksonville to take on their nemesis in what appears to be a collision course for destruction. This game carries some early implications with both teams looking to get one up on the other in their first of two games this season.

In my eyes, it all starts with the Colts' defense as they look to derail the freight train, Jags RB Maurice Jones-Drew, who hit them up for 547 all-purpose yards last season running like he was mad at the grass. I think the Quad City D.Js said it best... "Come on, ride the train, it's the choo choo ride it, woo woo!"

The 5-foot-7, 212-pound wrecking ball revved up the rpms in his last two games versus the Chiefs and Texans and is now ready to get his giddy-up on against a Colts defense ranked an unlucky No. 13 at stopping the run. That is if you believe in superstition.

'Statement game'

When asked if he was excited about the game, Jones-Drew was as cool as the other side of the pillow.

"Oh yeah," he said. "This game means a lot to everyone with all the things at stake. For us, I think it's a big statement game. We have been doing a lot of great things this season that has gone unnoticed because we play in a so called small market, which we don't believe in. We feel for an NFL team that everybody should get the same recognition. It's a respect deal and we have to go out there and win the respect of everyone. Not only the Colts, but the world, and there's a chance for us to do it on Monday night."

Knowing that the Jags will be looking to establish their running game with the one-two punch of Jones-Drew and RB Fred Taylor, the Colts defense is expected to be up for the challenge.

Sanders returns

Jones-Drew has an idea on how the Colts may try to shutdown the run game.

"Bob Sanders is back and it just seems like they're a different team when he's on the field, which is crazy because I've never seen anything like that before. I played against them last year, but watching them on film this year their defense is just totally different with him out there. It seems like everybody is playing faster and harder. So it makes sense. He's a good player so obviously they are going to try and put him in places to where he can make plays," he said.

Sanders missed both games last season when Jones-Drew went nuts on the Colts defense.

This will be a tough game for some fans to root for, but no one has it tougher than agent Adisa Bakari, who not only represents Jones-Drew but Colts starting S Antoine Bethea and DB T.J. Rushing as well as Jags LB Justin Durant and WR Mike Walker. Talk about mixed emotions he's got it bad.

"Of course I am very excited about the game, but at the same time I'm torn," Bakari said. "I represent three Jaguar players so I'm hoping obviously that all the players do well individually. I definitely won't put my favorite as to one team, but I think it will be a great battle between Maurice and Antoine on the defensive and offensive sides of the ball, as well as the battle on special-teams between Maurice and T.J. in their return numbers. It should prove to be an exciting game."

Bakari said that it's especially hard for the players because they're all good friends.

Overcoming skeptics and the size factor

Jones-Drew had an historical rookie season that was overshadowed and underemphasized throughout the major media until now. He's starting off this season at a rate that is substantially better than his rookie season. If he continues to perform the way he has been folks are going to have to start recognizing him as one of the best, if not, the best running back to come out of the 2006 draft.

What some members of the media fail to recognize Jags head coach Jack Del Rio let it be known just what their missing in regards to Jones-Drew's improving game.

"Maurice is a very special young man. He's a great teammate and he works hard, and when he gets the ball in his hands, he's electrifying. I'm very pleased to have him here and very pleased with the start he has again this year," Del Rio said.

Football fans, are you ready for some football? If not, get ready! This should be a good.
