MOBILE, Ala. — It was cold and windy on Day 2 of practice at college football's Senior Bowl all-star game, but Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith remained sizzling.

Rather than taking a nosedive after the drubbing Ohio State absorbed in the BCS Championship Game against Florida, Smith's draft status appears to be rising. He has impressed the scouts and shows no signs of letting up.

Smith got off to a quick start Tuesday by throwing darts all over the field to his receivers. He uncorked a couple of extremely strong throws for completions that had the scouts buzzing.

He demonstrated a quick release, good ball placement and, better yet, leadership skills on the field, which some NFL teams had questioned.

Smith threw the deep ball rather effortlessly and showed nice touch on fade routes.

The play of the day came when he launched a beautiful deep pass to Fresno State wide receiver Paul Williams for a touchdown, a definite crowd-pleaser.

Smith has drawn comparisons to Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick due to his arm strength, athleticism and mobility, but one Miami Dolphins scout was quick to point out that Smith is more like Donovan McNabb than Vick.

The Dolphins could be in the hunt for a quarterback come draft day, and they did spend some time with Smith after Monday's practice. Another scout added that if you give Smith time to throw the ball, he will pick a secondary apart.

Who's hot?

Michigan standout Leon Hall solidified himself as the top defensive back on display by making big plays and being in the right spot more often than not. He had a number of pass break-ups during practice and drew raves from the Tampa Bay Bucs coaching staff.

Who's not?

Fresno State cornerback Marcus McCauley is struggling and has heard it from the coaching staff for two days now about not finishing plays. McCauley is projected as a mid to late first-rounder but has given up more plays than he's made.
