Senior Bowl is a Wrap

Game day for the Senior Bowl was much like the week of practice: cold and raining. Yet the 100 prospects participating in the All-Star event took the field looking to make a lasting impression on scouts before the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

The North Team led by Ohio State QB Troy Smith blanked the South Team 27-0, making this the third shutout performance in Senior Bowl history.

The Heisman Trophy winning quarterback drove the North Team down the field on the opening drive and capped it off with a 7-yard touchdown run by Penn State RB Tony Hunt.

Smith's performance was less than stellar, completing five out of 15 passes for 52-yards and a touchdown. His touchdown throw came in the third quarter when he hooked up with his favorite target of the week, Washington State WR Jason Hill, for the game's final score.

Movin' on up

Ohio State DT David Patterson could see his draft stock skyrocket after his performance at the Senior Bowl. He put on a clinic at the D-tackle position in Mobile, finishing the game with two tackles and two sacks. He was in on virtually every play.

Patterson is very intense, disruptive and leader on the field. He has a good inside spin move and does a lot of things well.

Patterson's teammate, DT Quinn Pitcock, flew under the radar during practice as he had a tough time early in the week adjusting to the switch to nose-tackle, but did have a sack in the game and maintains his first-round status.

Although LSU WR Dwayne Bowe was held without a catch during the game he was tabbed by many as the best receiver on display. The 6-foot-1, 201-pound Bowe, impressed the scouts with his athletic ability, willingness to go across the middle, and deep speed. Bowe made a number of acrobatic grabs during the week to elevate his stock.

Hunt strong inside

With none of the elite running backs in attendance, RB Tony Hunt made the best of his opportunity and really opened some eyes. Hunt is a strong inside runner, hitting the hole with a reckless abandon, and has nice cutback ability.

He's a good receiver out of the backfield and seems to get stronger as the game go on. Hunt was a solid performer throughout the week of practice and should make for a good utility back at the next level.

Hunt was named the 2007 Under Armour Senior Bowl Most Valuable Player.

Droppin' like it's hot

UTEP QB Jordan Palmer was erratic throughout the week of practice, but showed some signs of life on Thursday, the final day of practice, when he threw a couple of touchdown passes. Still, on this day, I watched Palmer, who is 6-foot-5, over shoot a wide open TE Joe Newton, who is 6-foot-7, standing along the sideline 15-yards away.

Palmer was also picked off when he tried to force the ball into his receiver, which appears to be his MO. Palmer will have his work cut out for him and is on the borderline of becoming an undrafted free agent.

Georgia DE Quentin Moses, one of the highest rated defensive players entering the draft, was M.I.A at the Senior Bowl.

I watched Moses get swallowed up by opposing offensive linemen and pushed around like a rag doll.

He showed no aggression at the point of attack and appeared to get lost in the shuffle. Moses lacks bulk to play the end position and may be asked to make the switch to outside linebacker in the pros where he would be right at home.
